 | | Posted by: colweaver | 3/12/2010 2:16 PM | Compartment C, Car 293 is one my favorite Edward Hopper paintings. He painted it, oil on canvas, in 1938. He is most famous for his later paintings such as “Nighthawks” which he completed in 1942. Though he died in 1967 his influence is still with us today. Hopper was a professional painter; he painted for a living. His contemporaries in the art world lauded his work, and he found commercial favor producing work worthy enough to sell. Selling his work made it possible for Hopper to produce even more artistically and commercially acclaimed work. Sales also provided him with shelter, food, an old Dodge, and the ability to travel in search of new subjects for his canvas. Who can say that Hopper’s work was better than someone more obscure? Hopper’s paintings attract because of the colors he used, and because of the subtle message carried in everyone one of his paintings. I believe that we know Hopper today because his work generated commercial value, thus making the creation of new successes possible throughout a long and productive career. Edward Hopper was a Republican, and so was his wife Josephine Nivison Hopper, an artist in her own right. It’s easy to know what Jo looked like because she posed for almost all of his paintings. We don’t think of the artsy types as Republicans today, but in Roosevelt’s era many actors, artists, and musicians were Republican. Mr. and Mrs. Hopper hated Franklin Roosevelt, because they vehemently disagreed with the Socialist direction he took America. The Hoppers were capitalists, and so, they’ d be shocked to hear Nancy Pelosi talking this morning about how wonderful it would be if musicians and artists could practice their craft without the need to make money. How nice it would be if they could have health insurance without being bothered by paying for it. They’d be shocked and offended. Hopper spent his share of time in New York’s hospitals just like many older men eventually must. His biography doesn’t mention who paid the bills for his illnesses and surgeries, but I’ll just bet Hopper paid cash. He never expected anyone to pay his bills for him. Hopper’s talent had its own intrinsic value, but he appreciated the economic value others placed upon his work. He didn’t believe in the philosophy of art for art’s sake. For example, I mentioned earlier that Jo too was an artist. She was good, but her talents weren’t his talents, so she wasn’t commercially successful. Her art is interesting today only because she was present at the creation of Edward Hopper the artist. In the sense of full disclosure, please note that Hopper was also a brilliant water color painter and illustrator. He made his early living as a well-paid illustrator before he finally achieved fame in oil. He made a living, but he didn’t feel right about it. However, the money earned from illustrating gave him the time he needed to be a world renowned painter. World renowned because his works are currently on exhibit in Milan, Italy until summers’ end. If you want to see an original Hopper, ride up to the Indianapolis Museum of Art or to the Swope Museum in Terre Haute. If the Hoppers Roosevelt just think what they’d say about the current White House occupant. On Saturday 20 March the Lieutenant Governor of Indiana Becky Skillman is our guest along with U.S. Senate candidate Marlin Stutzman. The March breakfast is a pancake breakfast hosted by Mae Cooper at the Morgan County Administration Building 180 S. Main St., Martinsville. We'll start at 8:00 AM. Looking ahead there will be no April breakfast because of our annual Lincoln Day Dinner on Thursday 22 April, where our speaker is the former and future Speaker of the Indiana House of Representatives, Brian Bosma. Looking forward to May for the warm weather and a big race, we also have for the first time the Auditor of the State of Indiana Tim Berry attending our breakfast. Again, we are trying a new location for this breakfast: The Brooklyn Christian Church, 7 S. Church Street in Brooklyn. | | FLASH!!! Just like me, local democrats are shocked and surprised by the abrupt resignation of their chairman Daymon Brodhacker. This is an interesting turn of events since the reorganization caucus reelected him only last March. Regardless of his reasons, Daymon Brodhacker is one of the nicest people you’d ever want to meet. While I disagree with his spin of the 2008 election results here in Morgan County, and I certainly would not rate the performance of their commissioner candidate as a gain, those don’t detract from the fact that Daymon was a worthy opponent. Daymon was a hard worker, but unlike some of his candidates, he never allowed his frustrations to effect his good humor. He was the happy warrior who probably knew he was fighting a losing battle, but like Benjamin Guggenheim on the Titanic, he went down like a gentleman. Speaking of the Titanic, it’s hard to find a captain when you know how the story always ends. For Morgan County democrats, election day is like Bill Murray’s alarm clock going off in the movie Ground Hog Day; oh, not again. Good luck Daymon. According to the latest Gallup poll, a majority of Americans (51%) disapprove of his handling of federal spending and a plurality (48%) disapproves of his handling of the deficit.
