 More than promises. Minimize

The difference between sales and marketing isn’t readily apparent even to professionals. For our purposes let’s just say that marketing is the art of developing an image that inspires consumer confidence in the product. Selling, on the other hand, is directly placing the product in the consumers hand by closing the sale. Automobiles provide excellent examples of both concepts.
Cadillac was the “standard of the world” for fifty years. The name Cadillac conjured images of luxury and quality. Marketing takes place in the mind, but selling is the shiny new Caddy sitting in your garage. It took years of poor quality and competition from the Japanese before Cadillac lost its good name.
Political parties market and sell their brands, but like Cadillac, losing the quality image is expensive, requiring an intensive and expensive endeavor to regain it. Democrats and Republicans both ignored marketing realities in an apparent competition to damage themselves the last few decades, and that’s one of the key reasons for independent, Libertarian, and Tea Party skepticism.
My GOP is Goldwater, Reagan, and the belief in limited government intrusion in our social and economic lives, but look at the damage both Bushes and the Republican Congress did to our brand. The only good news is that our competitors are self-destructing faster than the speed of sound. It’s spring and our bullpen is warming up to pitch another inning, but it’s false security to focus on the other team’s problems. We will soon find ourselves pitching, and there’s no tolerance for less than a perfect game next time.
A year ago the GOP was considered dead and irrelevant. What a difference a year of Marxism, lies, and hubris make in the political landscape. So, what are we going to do when we take Congress and the White House back, and how are we going to do it: sales and marketing.
One of the best marketing ideas I ever heard was the “Contract with America.” It created a concept of governing that was easily communicated and understood by the electorate. It also provided a road map for governing when we took control of the House and Senate in 1994. The “Contract” captured America’s imagination because it was definable, and because of its clarity it was easy to sell.
I’ve heard that voters have a short memory, but that isn’t true. Voters and customers are just different forms of the same thing, and customers always remember getting screwed. For example, I had a Cadillac once and I’d consider it again. However, I also leased an Audi 5000 in 1985, and I don’t care how good they are now—never again. Hence, voters remember the “Contract” and how we failed to live up to our obligations.
If we focus our message to the mission essential tasks necessary to break the fall and turn America around to meet its destiny then we will win in 2010 and 2012. If we actually govern as we promise in our campaigns we have the opportunity to create a new majority for generations to come.
If we fail, then I fear that we are in for sustained political, social, and economic instability of a kind never seen on this continent. It’s too late for the hapless democrats, but for the party, the nation, our children, and the future we Republicans must do more than market and sell—we must deliver.

Now this I can agree too. Unfortunately, as I have said before, the decline has been going on at the local level too. Regardless of what some of you may think of me, I would reccomend a good long look at the disgruntlement of the taxpayers locally. Just because the dems have left themselves out to dry at the state and national level doesn't mean they can't come up with a solid candidate or two to step into key positions here. And right now, it's likely that their big screwups at the national level in recent years is all that's keeping them from doing it.

Mr. Weavers assesment about the Libertarians, Independents and Tea Party people is correct even locally. And remember, the vast majority of the tea party movement is made up of conservatives upset with the party bosses. People have reached the end of their ropes with self serving and overspending politicians at every level. So don't be surprised if a few of the incumbents are replaced in the primary this year. I'm not saying it's going to happen, just don't be surprised if it does.

I thought I would add this.

I know some of you wonder why I'm so hard on our elected officials.

When I was still young and wet behind the ears, so to speak, the only thing that mattered to me when it came time to vote was that letter behind the name. I didn't pay much attention to their views or anything else for that matter. I was simply too busy starting a family and worried about making ends meet. You know, the normal stuff we do everyday. I was always in a hurry, I didn't have time to talk to anyone or find out anything.

Well, because of that, we got Olympia Snowe up in Maine. that's right. I was one of those that voted her into office. She decided to run for office after her husband finished his second term as governor. And, like her, he's a republican. Even though I knew the difference between a liberal and a conservative at the ripe old age of 23, all that mattered was that (r) behind the name. I did my duty to support the party. What I didn't know was how liberal she was or just how liberal the northeast republicans were. Unfortunately, it wasn't until I got older and settled down that I began to see these things within my own party.

Even today, it still bothers me when I see politicians running under my party that are obviously not conservative, it bothers me. And while we are not going to get rid of all of them, it would be wise to listen to what the candidates say and do. For some, just keeping things the same is considered to be conservative. It's not. A conservative continua;;y seeks out ways to improve the economy and reduce government regulations because they understand that the fewer regulations, the better people will do on their own.

Anyways, as I said, I went along with the party in supporting Olympia Snowe back in the early 90's. Now I'm not so sure I should have. About the only thing I am sure of is that I wouldn't have voted for her democrat counterpart.

Monthly Breakfast

If you didn't get up to attend our monthly breakfast, you certainly missed a good one. Fifty eight Republicans joined our future congressman and current Secretary of State Todd Rokita and our State Auditor Tim Berry for great food and an interesting political discussion. Tim's analysis of Indiana's financial situation was enlightening. This was our first time as guests of Committeemen Bill and Brenda Mitchell and their team at the Brooklyn Christian Church. We hope they will volunteer to host us again; they did a great job.

Upcoming Events

We have exciting events in the offing. Eighty five Republicans joined us on Saturday 20 Feb to meet four of the 4th District candidates for Congress. On Saturday 20 March the Lieutenant Governor of Indiana Becky Skillman is our guest along with U.S. Senate candidate Marlin Stutzman. The March breakfast is a pancake breakfast hosted by Mae Cooper at the Morgan County Administration Building 180 S. Main St., Martinsville. We'll start at 8:00 AM.

Looking ahead there will be no April breakfast because of our annual Lincoln Day Dinner on Thursday 22 April, where our speaker is the former and future Speaker of the Indiana House of Representatives, Brian Bosma.

Looking forward to May for the warm weather and a big race, we also have for the first time the Auditor of the State of Indiana Tim Berry attending our breakfast. Again, we are trying a new location for this breakfast: The Brooklyn Christian Church, 7 S. Church Street in Brooklyn. Committeemen Bill and Brenda Mitchell are putting this event together, and it will fun doubling the population of Brooklyn with Republicans on Saturday 15 May at 8:00 AM.

FLASH!!!
Just like me, local democrats are shocked and surprised by the abrupt resignation of their chairman Daymon Brodhacker. This is an interesting turn of events since the reorganization caucus reelected him only last March.

Regardless of his reasons, Daymon Brodhacker is one of the nicest people you’d ever want to meet. While I disagree with his spin of the 2008 election results here in Morgan County, and I certainly would not rate the performance of their commissioner candidate as a gain, those don’t detract from the fact that Daymon was a worthy opponent.

Daymon was a hard worker, but unlike some of his candidates, he never allowed his frustrations to effect his good humor. He was the happy warrior who probably knew he was fighting a losing battle, but like Benjamin Guggenheim on the Titanic, he went down like a gentleman.

Speaking of the Titanic, it’s hard to find a captain when you know how the story always ends. For Morgan County democrats, election day is like Bill Murray’s alarm clock going off in the movie Ground Hog Day; oh, not again.

Good luck Daymon. Speaking on behalf of the entire Morgan County Republican Central Committee, we thank you for honorably serving the electoral process.

John Voight on Obama
New Poll

Poll Numbers – Although President Obama remains personally very popular, views on his handling of federal spending have dropped significantly over the last several weeks.  According to the latest Gallup poll, a majority of Americans (51%) disapprove of his handling of federal spending and a plurality (48%) disapproves of his handling of the deficit.  The poll also says that President Obama’s favorability rating (67%) is similar to President George W. Bush’s favorability rating (65%) at the same point in his presidency.

Also, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll, Americans now trust REPUBLICANS on the economy more than the Democrats 45% to 39%.
