Convincing my wife that flying airplanes is cheaper than letting them sit was counterintuitive. Even though all of us accept the aphorism “use it or lose it” as valid truth, she just couldn’t believe that pouring precious four-dollar-a-gallon scarce fossil fuel assets through a carburetor to produce noise and speed was money well spent.
I know it is a hard sell, but “use it or lose it” is what makes people drag themselves out of bed in the dark to flagellate themselves at the YMCA. I thought I was saving money by driving my 35 MPG sports car all summer while the 12 MPG Hemi sat in the garage. Wrong, those sealed front wheel bearings failed within five hundred miles of each other from a summer of disuse. Fortunately for me I was able to drive the beast to the same dealer in Cadillac Michigan for replacement without calling AAA from the middle of nowhere.
I accept the validity of “use it or lose it” in everything except money. The Obama budget, if you would call it that, is the most radical example of “use it or lose it” with our money. Budgets infer fiscal restraint, but not with these spendthrifts.
Obviously I disagree with Obama on the budget just like everything else. I believe good old Samuel Johnson knew more about the use of money than anyone I know:
“A man who keeps his money, has in reality, more use from it than he can have by spending it.”
In the above quote , Dr. Johnson spoke strongly of the influence a rich man has by being rich. Just being rich doesn’t really require spending money to have the highest and best use of it. This isn’t rocket science, so why doesn’t the federal government understand this simple concept from a man who lived at the time of our Revolution?
All of us are about to be taught a lesson about money by our creditors. If we owe the bank money we usually don’t poke our fingers in the banker’s eye. Borrowing infers a subservient role for the borrower to the lender. Nations experience this on a larger scale, but there is no escaping the due date or call of the note.
Few understand the national debt until they put it on their own terms. It was more benign when we owed it to ourselves, but not anymore. The Rosetta Stone for me was when I imagined owing so much money that my current and future income didn’t cover the interest. That’s the national debt that we owe not to ourselves but to China.
The U.S. is spending and borrowing more money than we can ever pay back. The danger is that we owe our future to our enemies. China is not our friend, and they seek to replace us as the world’s only hegemonic power. They produce and sell while we borrow and spend. We no longer produce much that the world is willing to pay us for, and perhaps that’s because we are no longer willing to compete.
Puppies, babies, kittens, and nations compete from birth to death without choice. Competition is simply the way of the world we are born into. It does little good for individuals to increase their savings rate when the greedy government taxes it away from you to pay its debts. Money in our bank is better than money in someone else’s cash register. It takes discipline and commitment, but both are out of style in modern America. I shudder to imagine the social unraveling that will accompany the bill for all of this largess.

This reminds me of a time when somebody asked me why I didn't take my business to "wealthy" neighborhoods where there is more money.

The response was "wealthy don't get wealthy by spending their money, the poor get poor by spending their money".

Monthly Breakfast

If you didn't get up to attend our monthly breakfast, you certainly missed a good one. Fifty eight Republicans joined our future congressman and current Secretary of State Todd Rokita and our State Auditor Tim Berry for great food and an interesting political discussion. Tim's analysis of Indiana's financial situation was enlightening. This was our first time as guests of Committeemen Bill and Brenda Mitchell and their team at the Brooklyn Christian Church. We hope they will volunteer to host us again; they did a great job.

Upcoming Events

We have exciting events in the offing. Eighty five Republicans joined us on Saturday 20 Feb to meet four of the 4th District candidates for Congress. On Saturday 20 March the Lieutenant Governor of Indiana Becky Skillman is our guest along with U.S. Senate candidate Marlin Stutzman. The March breakfast is a pancake breakfast hosted by Mae Cooper at the Morgan County Administration Building 180 S. Main St., Martinsville. We'll start at 8:00 AM.

Looking ahead there will be no April breakfast because of our annual Lincoln Day Dinner on Thursday 22 April, where our speaker is the former and future Speaker of the Indiana House of Representatives, Brian Bosma.

Looking forward to May for the warm weather and a big race, we also have for the first time the Auditor of the State of Indiana Tim Berry attending our breakfast. Again, we are trying a new location for this breakfast: The Brooklyn Christian Church, 7 S. Church Street in Brooklyn. Committeemen Bill and Brenda Mitchell are putting this event together, and it will fun doubling the population of Brooklyn with Republicans on Saturday 15 May at 8:00 AM.

Why so secret?

The Morgan County democrats are going to try again. They've called a caucus on 25 July for another attempt to elect a chairman, but the public isn't invited. For the record, every Morgan County Republican caucus held in the last four years has been public. Everyone is invited. Why so secret demos?

FLASH!!!
Just like me, local democrats are shocked and surprised by the abrupt resignation of their chairman Daymon Brodhacker. This is an interesting turn of events since the reorganization caucus reelected him only last March.

Regardless of his reasons, Daymon Brodhacker is one of the nicest people you’d ever want to meet. While I disagree with his spin of the 2008 election results here in Morgan County, and I certainly would not rate the performance of their commissioner candidate as a gain, those don’t detract from the fact that Daymon was a worthy opponent.

Daymon was a hard worker, but unlike some of his candidates, he never allowed his frustrations to effect his good humor. He was the happy warrior who probably knew he was fighting a losing battle, but like Benjamin Guggenheim on the Titanic, he went down like a gentleman.

Speaking of the Titanic, it’s hard to find a captain when you know how the story always ends. For Morgan County democrats, election day is like Bill Murray’s alarm clock going off in the movie Ground Hog Day; oh, not again.

Good luck Daymon. Speaking on behalf of the entire Morgan County Republican Central Committee, we thank you for honorably serving the electoral process.

John Voight on Obama
New Poll

Poll Numbers – Although President Obama remains personally very popular, views on his handling of federal spending have dropped significantly over the last several weeks.  According to the latest Gallup poll, a majority of Americans (51%) disapprove of his handling of federal spending and a plurality (48%) disapproves of his handling of the deficit.  The poll also says that President Obama’s favorability rating (67%) is similar to President George W. Bush’s favorability rating (65%) at the same point in his presidency.

Also, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll, Americans now trust REPUBLICANS on the economy more than the Democrats 45% to 39%.
