 Good Morning Rip Minimize

During my novitiate as an airline pilot, I was like Captain Ernest K. Gann alluded in his book Fate is the Hunter “tangled and stumbling in the robes of my order.” However, it was my uncommon good luck to play subaltern for some of our airline’s most experienced captains. Cumulatively they amassed hundreds of years of safe flying throughout their careers, and for those of us willing to listen-- an endless font of practical information on flying and other subjects.

In the airline world, as in the steamship world preceding it, there’s a principle known as “Captain’s Authority.” Many of you have probably heard of the riverboat Delta Queen  based in Cincinnati; it still traverses the inland waterways. You may not know that she has a sister ship the Delta King permanently moored on the American River in Sacramento.

On a long Sacramento layover several years ago I had the chance to dine on the Delta King. The first thing I noticed upon boarding the vessel was a big sign over the door leading into the parlor: “THE CAPTAIN’S WORD IS LAW.” That sign said everything you needed to know about “Captain’s Authority.”

I thought of this because so much of the political rhetoric from the tea party masses and other progressives is that they want their freedom back. We have in this country what I call the Rip Van Winkle affect. Most of America, like Rip, has been asleep for decades.

One of the old airline captains told me in no uncertain terms that Captain’s authority is never taken away; it’s only given away. The Rip Van Winkles of America need to understand that none of their freedom or liberty was taken from them, thus, demanding that it be given back is both fallacious and specious.

Economist F.A. Hayek warned us over sixty years ago in his little book The Road to Serfdom. The book is so dangerous that for years it was available underground in Eastern Europe before the fall of communism. It’s nothing less than a call against the domination of individual citizens by the Leviathan of centralized government. You can get it on Amazon without fear of reprisal.

Over time, we have voluntarily given up liberty in the pursuit of convenience and safety. The recently awakened masses sense that they’ve been robbed, but they only seek to absolve themselves of the fact that they’ve sold their birthright at yard sale prices with nothing to show for it.

I’ll write more on this later, but for now, look at what was given to you. Ask yourself what you’ve done with your birthright, and do you like what you see? I suspect that the recently awakened Van Winkles casting aspersions at us who’ve been plangently ringing freedom’s bell must eventually look in the mirror for someone to indict. All of us gave it away bit by bit unnoticed like a thief in the night.

The Republican Party is the only viable conduit of voter dissatisfaction. It’s obvious to everyone that the democrats aren’t getting the message. Alexander Hamilton was correct when he observed that he “...never expected to see a perfect work from imperfect men.” So, I don’t know why the outliers expect the GOP to be perfect—it’s not. The new darling of the senate Scott Brown has already reached out to imperfection, and I’m disappointed, but I’m not throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

As far as the outliers are concerned I hope many of them continue to outlie. I don’t regard them pejoratively; indeed, we need them to agitate from without to help keep the GOP on the right track. The yeoman’s work, however, will fall to those of us loyal Republicans. It is we who must work to pull the party back to the right and keep it there. We aren’t surrendering our liberty or our party to anyone. Try either one and be ready for a fight. No more white flags.  No more Lugars; no more Snowes; no more Collins; no more.

I must say that I'm saddened by Mr. Weavers attempt to justify supporting voter fraud.

While it's naturally obvious that perfection is not possible, it is entirely logical and rightfully expected that those we elect should live up to at least a little higher standard. Unfortunately, committing or supporting someone that has committed voter fraud is not doing so.

Now, we've all seen that Mr. Weaver has his little sayings on how the party is this or that, yet when confront with the obvious character flaws that he lashes out towards, he will always try his utmost to back pedal as if the standards he sets for the rest of us do not apply to him or his fellows.

As I have stated before, this is hypocricy at best and it only serves to give our brand of politics both a bad name and reputation.

Re: Good Morning Rip  By Lukester on 2/24/2010 11:18 PM
of course we can still get road to serfdom without punishment. Obama has only been in office for a year. Burning of books is scheduled for year 3.

Danny Oh I must know more! please enlighten us! don't tell, umm, uhh,the GOP has invited in ACORN to register the illegal aliens in our county. or was it that time the armed black panthers were guarding the poll?

Re: Good Morning Rip  By Raspberries2U on 2/25/2010 5:05 AM
What the $@#& is Danny talking about now!?!? Does anybody know? Is that parseltongue our poor little unloved snake is speaking? I don't think even Harry Potter could translate that.

Re: Good Morning Rip  By Danny Stewart on 2/25/2010 5:47 AM
Since a few have seemed to have forgotten, let's go back a few years to the previous Martinsville mayor. While he was not alone, he was the only one left during the last city elections. The previous mayor was caught picking up voter balots from a few of our older residents and taking them to the election office. This, as everyone who holds office knows is against the law. Hence, you have voter fraud. Now, the last mayor claimed he was just helping out these residents. Regardless, it's still illegal. For those of you that were not here during that little incident, well, it's not difficult to find. As I have said, Mr. Weaver talks high standards for the party, yet does not follow those standards himself. It's hypocricy at its finest. Funny how he claims the high moral ground when he does exactly what he criticizes the libs for doing. Now, you're free to except those standards if you like, however it would just seem logical to maintain the same standards for everyone, not just a few.

Re: Good Morning Rip  By Lukester on 2/25/2010 8:37 AM
Ok As I'm from the distant land of northern Morgan county so I'm not always privvy to Martinsville corruption. Soo how does El Marto fit into this equation?

Re: Good Morning Rip  By Danny Stewart on 2/25/2010 10:23 AM
He and the party leadership supported and promoted the previous mayor in the last city election knowing full well the illegal activities that accured. He has also stated publicly at the Lincoln Day dinner that criminal activity will not be excepted or supported yet does so when members of his fellows are involved. And as he is prone to state what is law on here, it strikes one as hypocricy.

Re: Good Morning Rip  By Lukester on 2/25/2010 1:12 PM
Thank you for the clarification.

Re: Good Morning Rip  By Raspberries2U on 2/26/2010 4:21 AM
I saw Danny on facebook. He is a fan of the MCGOP facebook page. Can you believe it?!

I hope Marty sues him for slander and has the paperwork served on him at the Lincoln Day Dinner.....right in front of all the Republicans Danny claims to support and be a fan of. Now that would be justice and karma all wrapped up together in one package with a big red, white and blue ribbon and bow on top. That could be added entertainment for the evening right after Mr. Bosma speaks. Just a thought...and a delicious one at that.

Re: Good Morning Rip  By Danny Stewart on 2/26/2010 5:30 AM
Madam raspberries, I'd be careful if I were you. Especially when the evidence for which I speak is already on this site for all to see. That's not a threat, just a word of caution.

Re: Good Morning Rip  By Raspberries2U on 2/26/2010 7:10 AM
My comments to you are not a threat either and are only meant to be a word of caution. I've said it before and I'll say it again...One of these days that big dog you keep poking sticks at is going to get mad enough to bite. I was just dreaming publicly about how much fun it would be for me to be there when that day happens. Have a nice day and I look forward to meeting you in person at the Lincoln Day Dinner.

Re: Good Morning Rip  By Liberator on 2/26/2010 5:41 PM
It's seems there is a really big misconception here. The Republican Party is the property of all Morgan County Republicans. The chairman serves at the pleasure of it's members. The chairman is not the Republican Party but a servant to others. Yes like Danny. I also think Mr Weaver is the kind of man that appreciates an out spoken member. He is anything but a big dog. He is just a member of the Republican party that can be removed like anyone else. All Republicans don't see eye to eye and to think that mister weaver would be offended is the biggest insult to ones manly-hood you could have give him. Now that is something he may want to take retaliation on but with.

I for one think he will reconsider his support for someone who blatantly broke the law and tried to justify it. His reputation is more Important to him than anything. Looks to me like Danny is one who really loves the Party enough to stand up to protect it reputation. Those who suck-up and perpetuate any corruption will be the target of those who fired up and out to replace them. I've been a Republican longer than our Chairman and will say this. If the Party doesn't change it's good old boy ways on it's own there are a growing number who are organizing to change it for us. I would rather us do it on our own than to be embarrassed.

Danny seems to be one of the only Republicans on here that loves the Party enough to try and keep it clean and I think someone owes him an Apology.

Just my opinion.

Re: Good Morning Rip  By Raspberries2U on 2/27/2010 4:13 AM
Mr. Liberty/Liberator,
I have been a lurking admirer of yours for a long time on the paper's website comment board. That being said I have disagree about owing anyone an apology. I respect Danny's passion and his efforts to make the Republican party better. I do not, however, condone the method in which he goes about it. I see his endless posts blasting Marty as being of a personal nature. How often does he call out an office holder in the county and make comments? I don't remember seeing any. Marty holds no office yet HE is in Danny's crosshairs every time. In Danny's world Marty IS the Republican party. When the next chairperson takes over then what? Will he continue bashing Marty like Obama is doing to Bush long after he is gone. Or will he turn his attention to the new chair? Time will tell.

As for the incident you two refer to I know nothing about it and therefore will not comment. My guess is that Marty isn't perfect and makes mistakes just like the rest of us. "Big dog" was not meant to say that he is on some sort of pedestal above the rest of us. It was just part of the cute little saying. Kindof like, "If you can't run with the big dogs then stay on the porch". I get the impression that since Danny can't run with the big dogs that he is relegated to the porch boo wooing. How smart is it for that same dog to turn his agression towards the owner that brings him a bowl of food every night and bite the hand that feeds him? That is what I feel Danny is doing. He wants to be in local government and can't do it successful. He wants to be important and when he can't be he attacks. I am not in public office and probably never will be. I accept that I am not cut out for that role in the party. My place to contribute is in other areas as a support person. Being a support person does not include bashing the chairperson on his own blog on the party website. Danny is an embarassment. Can you imagine the laughter from the Dems everytime they read something Danny writes on here? There are people within the party that I disagree with but we are supposed to present a united front against the liberals and settle our petty differences IN PRIVATE. That would be the classier thing to do.

Re: Good Morning Rip  By Lukester on 2/27/2010 10:53 PM
Ok Folks. I have researched the situation we are discussing with Buskirk, El Marto and voter fraud. Here is a brief of what happened:

Buskirk and former Martinsville City Council member Erma Scott were charged in January of 2000 after an investigation by the Indiana State Police produced evidence the two had handled absentee voters’ ballots. The investigation showed Buskirk and Scott had been present when absentee votes were cast. They then transported the ballots to a mailbox for the voters.

Please note that the date this happened was in 2000. El Marto has been the GOP chairman since 2005. The math does not work.

Sorry Danny you got this one wrong.

Re: Good Morning Rip  By Raspberries2U on 2/28/2010 5:26 AM
Thank you for the FACTS, Lukester.

Danny, are you going to apologize now?

Marto, I was going to give you the name and number of a really good attorney and then I remembered who you were married to (DOH!...slap to forehead) I figure you've got that base well covered so I will just wish you good luck with your lawsuit.

Re: Good Morning Rip  By Danny Stewart on 2/28/2010 4:49 PM
I never stated he was chairman at the time of the incident. I stated that he supported the guy during the last city elections knowing full well the criminal history of the guy. Therefore, he did support voter fraud by condoning the guys relection bid instead of asking him to step down. This is hypocritical since on this very site he states that candiates with criminal records are not exceptable to run for the party.

At no time did I state he was chairman when it happened.
So you must parden the disagreement but what I stated was not wrong.
But I digress.

As for you madam raspberries, there was no slander. Let alone the FACT that you were too lazy to even look to see what I was refering too. Which make you as much a hypocrit for your accusations when you don't even have the knowledge of what I was talking about.

Then again, that's half of the problem. People like you that don't take the time to educate yourself on anything. You just go with the flow. Politics is a rough and tumble world, if you don't want to educate yourself on the issues, then I suggest staying out of it.

Re: Good Morning Rip  By Raspberries2U on 3/2/2010 7:53 AM
Danny,
I got off my lazy keister last night and did some research just for you.
According to my sources the incident you refer to wasn't illegal at the time it occurred. The law was written after the fact. You neglected to mention that in your post. Now lets analyze a couple of examples where applying your sort of thinking to other situations and laws might cause a problem for you.

1. You have relatives in your deep dark past that bought beer and consumed when they were 19 and 20 years old. Then the legal drinking age was raised to 21. Do you continue to go to Thanksgiving dinner with these "underage drinkers" year after year? Could you stand to sit at the same table with these unlawful scallywags?

2. Your best bud blows a .09 on a breathalizer test and gets let go by the cop back in the '80's. Fast forward to present day when the legal limit gets changed to .08. Do you still hang out with your friend and thus condone his "illegal, DUI" activities? Or maybe it was you that got that lucky break when you were young?

Some people like to comapare apples and grapes. In your case you like to compare 2010 with three decades ago.

As for your comment about me not taking the time to educate myself on issues..........Hmmm, well, my response to that is I DIDN'T SEE YOU AT THE COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT GETTING EDUCATED ON ANYTHING so I suggest you not make anymore comments about how our county is being run.

FLASH!!!
Just like me, local democrats are shocked and surprised by the abrupt resignation of their chairman Daymon Brodhacker. This is an interesting turn of events since the reorganization caucus reelected him only last March.

Regardless of his reasons, Daymon Brodhacker is one of the nicest people you’d ever want to meet. While I disagree with his spin of the 2008 election results here in Morgan County, and I certainly would not rate the performance of their commissioner candidate as a gain, those don’t detract from the fact that Daymon was a worthy opponent.

Daymon was a hard worker, but unlike some of his candidates, he never allowed his frustrations to effect his good humor. He was the happy warrior who probably knew he was fighting a losing battle, but like Benjamin Guggenheim on the Titanic, he went down like a gentleman.

Speaking of the Titanic, it’s hard to find a captain when you know how the story always ends. For Morgan County democrats, election day is like Bill Murray’s alarm clock going off in the movie Ground Hog Day; oh, not again.

Good luck Daymon. Speaking on behalf of the entire Morgan County Republican Central Committee, we thank you for honorably serving the electoral process.

Bush’s favorability rating (65%) at the same point in his presidency.

Also, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll, Americans now trust REPUBLICANS on the economy more than the Democrats 45% to 39%.
