 Checkmate Minimize

Chess is a challenging game, because every choice involves strategic thinking beyond the current move. The game board is simple like in checkers. The game pieces aren’t complicated, but the choices you make in moving them are where the frustration and agony come in.
Thanks to computers there’s always a partner ready to play. I have to be in the right frame of mind, because this isn’t a game one plays while watching TV. I don’t recommend chess if you’ve already had a difficult day, because your computer opponent knows no mercy. The ruthless computer weighs its options before your eyes through sinews of light between the next seven or eight moves ahead it is considering. I’ve never won, but I consider myself lucky to fight it to a stalemate. Playing against such a formidable foe makes me a better player.
Politics and chess are similar. Both are strategic games requiring the player to look several moves ahead. There’s no better example of failing to think ahead than those misguided Republicans who voted in the 2008 democrat Primary. Rush Limbaugh’s Operation Chaos sounded like a pretty good idea at the time, but few stopped to consider the consequences.
Hence the sad example of Tara Elizabeth Nelson who is disappointed that her county chairman won’t sign a form allowing her to run in the Republican Primary in May for 4th District Congress to replace Congressman Buyer. I know all about her case because of an email she sent out to all district chairmen today.
It seems that Tara is twenty seven years old and only voted once in her life, yep, you guessed it, she asked for a democrat ballot in the May 2008 Primary. Just so you get this straight, the only vote she ever cast in her entire life was for Obama. I know what you are thinking, Rush told Hoosiers to vote for Hillary, so go figure…
Now, Tara wants to run in the GOP Primary. Indiana statute says that the county chairman has to sign a paper approving her as a Republican, since she declared herself a democrat in the last election.  It’s the law, and there’s no evidence to support her case. If being a Republican were against the law there wouldn’t be enough evidence to have her arrested much less indicted or convicted.
He email contains all of the usual excuses why she could not vote before 2008. She pleads to become our personal representative in Washington, but she failed to exercise her most basic citizen responsibility to vote. This is completely incongruous to me as it was to her county chairman who refused to sign her petition. I guess the chairman was as galled as I was by her excuse for casting her only lifetime ballot in the democrat Primary: “Many other Republicans asked for the Democratic ballot in the 2008 primaries because they had strong feelings against the Democratic candidates. I am not so different from many of our Republican brothers and sisters.”
We’ve had a few Morgan County candidates file on the Republican ticket who voted democrat in the last Primary. However, except for one case, all had previously voted Republican at every opportunity. One candidate is sixty years old, says he voted but I found no evidence of it. I’m not going to challenge him, because I believe the voters will judge him better than I. However, in every case, we follow the law.
When the computer clobbers you in chess, well, it’s only a game. In politics the consequences of failure are usually more dramatic, but regardless of the game, it’s smart to think a few moves ahead.

Re: Checkmate  By Danny Stewart on 2/22/2010 2:30 PM
Good points. However, one must also see that with so many new people filing for office that there is a good deal of dissatisfaction with the current office holders. One must also conclude that these people are not the only ones that are dissatisfied with our current office holders.

One is free to think what they wish, but I would caution against smugness towards those that want to lead us in a different direction. Sooner or later that smugness will come back to haunt you.

Re: Checkmate  By Raspberries2U on 2/23/2010 4:10 AM
The point is where the heck has she been and what has she ever done for the party? She crawls out of the woodwork with her hand out because she needs something and expects our help. Seems to me like HER past has come back to haunt HER and SHE is the one acting smug.

Lots of people are dissatisfied with current office holders. However, that doesn't make THEM the one qualified to take over the office. This naive and ballsy woman needs to start her own party or run as an independent. She doesn't stand a snowball's chance in the Arizona dessert of getting elected anyways no matter which party decides to take her in and give her cover.

Monthly Breakfast

If you didn't get up to attend our monthly breakfast, you certainly missed a good one. Fifty eight Republicans joined our future congressman and current Secretary of State Todd Rokita and our State Auditor Tim Berry for great food and an interesting political discussion. Tim's analysis of Indiana's financial situation was enlightening. This was our first time as guests of Committeemen Bill and Brenda Mitchell and their team at the Brooklyn Christian Church. We hope they will volunteer to host us again; they did a great job.

Upcoming Events

We have exciting events in the offing. Eighty five Republicans joined us on Saturday 20 Feb to meet four of the 4th District candidates for Congress. On Saturday 20 March the Lieutenant Governor of Indiana Becky Skillman is our guest along with U.S. Senate candidate Marlin Stutzman. The March breakfast is a pancake breakfast hosted by Mae Cooper at the Morgan County Administration Building 180 S. Main St., Martinsville. We'll start at 8:00 AM.

Looking ahead there will be no April breakfast because of our annual Lincoln Day Dinner on Thursday 22 April, where our speaker is the former and future Speaker of the Indiana House of Representatives, Brian Bosma.

Looking forward to May for the warm weather and a big race, we also have for the first time the Auditor of the State of Indiana Tim Berry attending our breakfast. Again, we are trying a new location for this breakfast: The Brooklyn Christian Church, 7 S. Church Street in Brooklyn. Committeemen Bill and Brenda Mitchell are putting this event together, and it will fun doubling the population of Brooklyn with Republicans on Saturday 15 May at 8:00 AM.

Why so secret?

The Morgan County democrats are going to try again. They've called a caucus on 25 July for another attempt to elect a chairman, but the public isn't invited. For the record, every Morgan County Republican caucus held in the last four years has been public. Everyone is invited. Why so secret demos?

FLASH!!!
Just like me, local democrats are shocked and surprised by the abrupt resignation of their chairman Daymon Brodhacker. This is an interesting turn of events since the reorganization caucus reelected him only last March.

Regardless of his reasons, Daymon Brodhacker is one of the nicest people you’d ever want to meet. While I disagree with his spin of the 2008 election results here in Morgan County, and I certainly would not rate the performance of their commissioner candidate as a gain, those don’t detract from the fact that Daymon was a worthy opponent.

Daymon was a hard worker, but unlike some of his candidates, he never allowed his frustrations to effect his good humor. He was the happy warrior who probably knew he was fighting a losing battle, but like Benjamin Guggenheim on the Titanic, he went down like a gentleman.

Speaking of the Titanic, it’s hard to find a captain when you know how the story always ends. For Morgan County democrats, election day is like Bill Murray’s alarm clock going off in the movie Ground Hog Day; oh, not again.

Good luck Daymon. Speaking on behalf of the entire Morgan County Republican Central Committee, we thank you for honorably serving the electoral process.

John Voight on Obama
New Poll

Poll Numbers – Although President Obama remains personally very popular, views on his handling of federal spending have dropped significantly over the last several weeks.  According to the latest Gallup poll, a majority of Americans (51%) disapprove of his handling of federal spending and a plurality (48%) disapproves of his handling of the deficit.  The poll also says that President Obama’s favorability rating (67%) is similar to President George W. Bush’s favorability rating (65%) at the same point in his presidency.

Also, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll, Americans now trust REPUBLICANS on the economy more than the Democrats 45% to 39%.
