Growing up in the Kentucky media market gave me a taste for the, shall we say, more spirited political life. There was never a dull moment in Louisville, Jefferson County, or the rest of the Commonwealth.  I never made it to Fancy Farm for the big political barbeque, but maybe one of these days… My mother and sister still live on the Indiana side of the river and hear more about the shenanigans in Frankfort than Indianapolis. Indiana politics is pretty dull by comparison.
That was until Steve Buyer announced that he wasn’t running again, and Evan Bayh exposed himself—as the liberal he’s always been. Gottcha!
Now my phone rings every day with new candidates for the House and Senate. I’m afraid to take calls from my wife for fear she’s decided to run for Congress. I’m thankful that Beezer and P-Dog can’t talk; I thought that lean and hungry look in their eyes was a lust for Alpo, but I’m starting to wonder if they’ve heard that there is a House and Senate seat up for grabs.
I haven’t seen anything like quite like this since I visited the monkey house at the San Diego Zoo a few years ago on an airline layover. It’s just like a bunch of wild monkeys, and we have 88 days of it. It’s ironic, some of these opportunistic candidates never recognized me before at various political functions. I knew who they were, but I was just another face in the crowd to them. Perhaps it’s because I have a face that looks like everyone and no one at the same time. Now, for some reason, they all want to meet me.
I’m not rendering an endorsement right now, but I had an encounter with former Senator Dan Coats that is illustrative of his character. Attorney General Carter invited me to a reception for John McCain in the Kite penthouse atop the Conrad Hotel. It was an interesting up close and personal view of several GOP luminaries.
I ended up sitting on the sofa with Senator Coats. Every indication pointed to him as a political has-been. He wanted and needed nothing from me, nor was I anyone with something to offer of benefit to him. Yet, Coats engaged me in conversation and made me feel like I was someone important. Here was a guy who’d been a United States senator and an ambassador talking like a regular Joe to a regular Joe. Politics is a world of poseurs, some high-hat and haughty posing as regular guys. Some deservedly modest posing as high-hats, but Senator Dan Coats is one of those rarely genuine nice people who wander into public life.
I’m still waiting for the fun part of being county chairman, and the prospect of finding it looks pretty grim for now. I don’t know where Dick Cheney’s undisclosed location used to be, but I’d like to go there for a while. At least now I know how that poor guy trapped in the farm house felt in the cult movie Night of the Living Dead. Someone wake me up when this is over.

Re: The Human Zoo  By Liberator on 2/10/2010 11:37 AM
Jefferson County KY is a prime example of liberal destruction having taxed their business's right out of town. Taxation of a community beyond it's citizens ability's rather it's from democrats or Republicans is the most destructive one thing that can happen to a community out side of a terrorist attack although some would say the doubling of our income tax in 2007 was a terrorist attack.

We need to make sure we cleans from our elected community all those who voted for that increase. People lost their Christmas and vacations over that inconsiderate move and now you can bet many on the edge have lost their homes to foreclosure. Remember, they can be your friends and family and not your choice to trust with your purse strings.

They must be replaced with responsible adults who will manage our community within it's citizens ABILITY to pay for absolute needs and not provide or construct services and structures by a " that would be neat " or a " keep up with the Plainfields " approach. I drive through some communities that some how attracted a bunch of large industrial operations and their fire department used a pole barn or steel fab structure that cost about a 20-30 % of what we spent on a fire station that serves the same purpose. No they don't look real fancy. Schools ? lets don't go there but I will say this. I'll work my but off to elect those who will change our education system over to a privately run charter school system that payed on performance standards and who are responsible for their own buildings.

When a person gets in office they let their decision making become a reflection of their family name, thus letting their accomplishments become more of a shrine to their time in office than a wise and prudent decision for the community. Sure they don't want their name on a pole barn but rather would like it chiseled in limestone on the side if a million dollar exterior brick wall. Our grandma and grandpa has to fine a way to finance and pay for these emotional excess's that mean nothing to them. They have only to worry how to pay their taxes and utility bills while making decisions on rather to sell their house and move in with the kids or .......has anyone been to a tax sale lately ?

The people are fed up with this good old boy ruling authority over the people that compromises the communities financial health and well being for a visionary goal of looks and how many services we can provide.

The tea party movement was destined to happen in a nation of free people and free enterprise who's core values of existence was built on personal and community responsibility.

Yes the socialist disease has infected some of who we call Republicans in our community. Not by choice but by their blindness. You know just as long as we stand 50 feet in distance from the enemy we are doing fine. Unfortunately our enemy is slowly walking our nation to hell and we are just staying 50 feet behind them. It's not a matter of if but when we do the same thing. That must stop. Goods and services must be regulated by the community absolute need and ability to pay.

Yes some people will complain. Yes some people will scream and kick. Yes I am a parent that loves my children and knew how to say NO with love..

Monthly Breakfast

If you didn't get up to attend our monthly breakfast, you certainly missed a good one. Fifty eight Republicans joined our future congressman and current Secretary of State Todd Rokita and our State Auditor Tim Berry for great food and an interesting political discussion. Tim's analysis of Indiana's financial situation was enlightening. This was our first time as guests of Committeemen Bill and Brenda Mitchell and their team at the Brooklyn Christian Church. We hope they will volunteer to host us again; they did a great job.

Upcoming Events

We have exciting events in the offing. Eighty five Republicans joined us on Saturday 20 Feb to meet four of the 4th District candidates for Congress. On Saturday 20 March the Lieutenant Governor of Indiana Becky Skillman is our guest along with U.S. Senate candidate Marlin Stutzman. The March breakfast is a pancake breakfast hosted by Mae Cooper at the Morgan County Administration Building 180 S. Main St., Martinsville. We'll start at 8:00 AM.

Looking ahead there will be no April breakfast because of our annual Lincoln Day Dinner on Thursday 22 April, where our speaker is the former and future Speaker of the Indiana House of Representatives, Brian Bosma.

Looking forward to May for the warm weather and a big race, we also have for the first time the Auditor of the State of Indiana Tim Berry attending our breakfast. Again, we are trying a new location for this breakfast: The Brooklyn Christian Church, 7 S. Church Street in Brooklyn. Committeemen Bill and Brenda Mitchell are putting this event together, and it will fun doubling the population of Brooklyn with Republicans on Saturday 15 May at 8:00 AM.

Why so secret?

The Morgan County democrats are going to try again. They've called a caucus on 25 July for another attempt to elect a chairman, but the public isn't invited. For the record, every Morgan County Republican caucus held in the last four years has been public. Everyone is invited. Why so secret demos?

FLASH!!!
Just like me, local democrats are shocked and surprised by the abrupt resignation of their chairman Daymon Brodhacker. This is an interesting turn of events since the reorganization caucus reelected him only last March.

Regardless of his reasons, Daymon Brodhacker is one of the nicest people you’d ever want to meet. While I disagree with his spin of the 2008 election results here in Morgan County, and I certainly would not rate the performance of their commissioner candidate as a gain, those don’t detract from the fact that Daymon was a worthy opponent.

Daymon was a hard worker, but unlike some of his candidates, he never allowed his frustrations to effect his good humor. He was the happy warrior who probably knew he was fighting a losing battle, but like Benjamin Guggenheim on the Titanic, he went down like a gentleman.

Speaking of the Titanic, it’s hard to find a captain when you know how the story always ends. For Morgan County democrats, election day is like Bill Murray’s alarm clock going off in the movie Ground Hog Day; oh, not again.

Good luck Daymon. Speaking on behalf of the entire Morgan County Republican Central Committee, we thank you for honorably serving the electoral process.

John Voight on Obama
New Poll

Poll Numbers – Although President Obama remains personally very popular, views on his handling of federal spending have dropped significantly over the last several weeks.  According to the latest Gallup poll, a majority of Americans (51%) disapprove of his handling of federal spending and a plurality (48%) disapproves of his handling of the deficit.  The poll also says that President Obama’s favorability rating (67%) is similar to President George W. Bush’s favorability rating (65%) at the same point in his presidency.

Also, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll, Americans now trust REPUBLICANS on the economy more than the Democrats 45% to 39%.
