| Don't Say Franklin Sent You! | | Chairman's Thoughts
| By colweaver on3/12/2010 2:16 PM | |
| Compartment C, Car 293 is one my favorite Edward Hopper paintings. He painted it, oil on canvas, in 1938. He is most famous for his later paintings such as “Nighthawks” which he completed in 1942. Though he died in 1967 his influence is still with us today. Hopper was a professional painter; he painted for a living. His contemporaries in the art world lauded his work, and he found commercial favor producing work worthy enough to sell. Selling his work made it possible for ... | | |

| The difference between sales and marketing isn’t readily apparent even to professionals. For our purposes let’s just say that marketing is the art of developing an image that inspires consumer confidence in the product. Selling, on the other hand, is directly placing the product in the consumers hand by closing the sale. Automobiles provide excellent examples of both concepts. Cadillac was the “standard of the world” for fifty years. The name Cadillac ... | | |

| | Roads Scholar | | Chairman's Thoughts
| By colweaver on3/9/2010 3:30 PM | |
| Every year Purdue University and the Indiana Department of Transportation sponsor something called the “road school.” The purpose is to bring county officials up to date on the latest science and technology of roads and bridges. Most of the attendees aren’t technical people. On the contrary, they are county commissioners, county road supervisors, county surveyors, and other officials whose duties require a basic understanding of highways. Additionally, ... | | |

| | Buying our Friends | | Chairman's Thoughts
| By colweaver on3/8/2010 2:30 PM | |
| China is no friend of the United States, and it’s dangerous to place ourselves in a subordinate position to our enemies because of our insatiable spending. They use the wealth we’ve transferred to them for the purpose of replacing American interest and influence in Asia. None of this should be news to the most casual observer. I attended a briefing by Ambassador Richard Arm ... | | |

| By colweaver on3/4/2010 7:21 PM | |
| Convincing my wife that flying airplanes is cheaper than letting them sit was counterintuitive. Even though all of us accept the aphorism “use it or lose it” as valid truth, she just couldn’t believe that pouring precious four-dollar-a-gallon scarce fossil fuel assets through a carburetor to produce noise and speed was money well spent. I know it is a hard sell, but “use it or lose it” is what makes people drag themselves out of bed ... | | |

| | Bottoms Up | | Chairman's Thoughts
| By colweaver on3/2/2010 5:51 PM | |
| Good leaders don’t keep sacred cows. A sacred cow is object or program that’s become such a favorite that its existence is never questioned and there’s no shortage. It takes courage and discipline for executive leaders to question the unquestionable. The Quadrennial Defense Review or (QDR) is a study by the Department of Defense analyzing strategic objectives, programs, and resources. Every four years they review their internal systems and programs for relevance ... | | |

| | WORDS | | Chairman's Thoughts
| By colweaver on3/1/2010 5:50 PM | |
| My dictionary weighs three or four pounds proving that words do indeed have weight. Words can make people laugh, they can make people cry, they can make people think, and they can make people regret, so choose them carefully. I am very careful about the words I use in this Blog and the monthly Chairman’s Chatter newsletter, because I am a student of words. Words carry ideas; ideas have consequences. Words have been my friend and they’ve also been my enemy. & ... | | |

| | Good Morning Rip | | Chairman's Thoughts
| By colweaver on2/24/2010 10:24 AM | |
| During my novitiate as an airline pilot, I was like Captain Ernest K. Gann alluded in his book Fate is the Hunter “tangled and stumbling in the robes of my order.” However, it was my uncommon good luck to play subaltern for some of our airline’s most experienced captains. Cumulatively they amassed hundreds of years of safe flying throughout their careers, and for those of us willing to listen-- an endless font of practical information on flying and other subjects.

| | Happy Birthday | | Chairman's Thoughts
| By colweaver on2/22/2010 6:33 PM | |
| It’s been a busy day with many distractions, but we should remember that this is the 278th birthday of the Founder of the United States. He’s ill-treated in school books today, and his picture isn’t found on classroom walls anymore. He fought the Revolution on the battlefield, and through the sheer force of his character he made sure that the Revolut ... | | |

| | Checkmate | | Chairman's Thoughts
| By colweaver on2/16/2010 7:44 PM | |
| Chess is a challenging game, because every choice involves strategic thinking beyond the current move. The game board is simple like in checkers. The game pieces aren’t complicated, but the choices you make in moving them are where the frustration and agony come in. Thanks to computers there’s always a partner ready to play. I have to be in the right frame of mind, because this isn’t a game one plays while watching TV. I don’t recommend chess ... | | |

| Upcoming Events We have exciting events in the offing. Eighty five Republicans joined us on Saturday 20 Feb to meet four of the 4th District candidates for Congress. On Saturday 20 March the Lieutenant Governor of Indiana Becky Skillman is our guest along with U.S. Senate candidate Marlin Stutzman. The March breakfast is a pancake breakfast hosted by Mae Cooper at the Morgan County Administration Building 180 S. Main St., Martinsville. We'll start at 8:00 AM. Looking ahead there will be no April breakfast because of our annual Lincoln Day Dinner on Thursday 22 April, where our speaker is the former and future Speaker of the Indiana House of Representatives, Brian Bosma. Looking forward to May for the warm weather and a big race, we also have for the first time the Auditor of the State of Indiana Tim Berry attending our breakfast. Again, we are trying a new location for this breakfast: The Brooklyn Christian Church, 7 S. Church Street in Brooklyn. Committeemen Bill and Brenda Mitchell are putting this event together, and it will fun doubling the population of Brooklyn with Republicans on Saturday 15 May at 8:00 AM. read more ...

| | FLASH!!! Just like me, local democrats are shocked and surprised by the abrupt resignation of their chairman Daymon Brodhacker. This is an interesting turn of events since the reorganization caucus reelected him only last March. Regardless of his reasons, Daymon Brodhacker is one of the nicest people you’d ever want to meet. While I disagree with his spin of the 2008 election results here in Morgan County, and I certainly would not rate the performance of their commissioner candidate as a gain, those don’t detract from the fact that Daymon was a worthy opponent. Daymon was a hard worker, but unlike some of his candidates, he never allowed his frustrations to effect his good humor. He was the happy warrior who probably knew he was fighting a losing battle, but like Benjamin Guggenheim on the Titanic, he went down like a gentleman. Speaking of the Titanic, it’s hard to find a captain when you know how the story always ends. For Morgan County democrats, election day is like Bill Murray’s alarm clock going off in the movie Ground Hog Day; oh, not again. Good luck Daymon. Speaking on behalf of the entire Morgan County Republican Central Committee, we thank you for honorably serving the electoral process. read more ...

| | | New Poll Poll Numbers – Although President Obama remains personally very popular, views on his handling of federal spending have dropped significantly over the last several weeks. According to the latest Gallup poll, a majority of Americans (51%) disapprove of his handling of federal spending and a plurality (48%) disapproves of his handling of the deficit. The poll also says that President Obama’s favorability rating (67%) is similar to President George W. Bush’s favorability rating (65%) at the same point in his presidency. Also, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll, Americans now trust REPUBLICANS on the economy more than the Democrats 45% to 39%. read more ...
