| The Point | | Chairman's Thoughts
| By colweaver on3/31/2010 12:34 PM | |
| Abraham Lincoln and a man named Edward Everett spoke at the Gettysburg National Cemetery dedication in what we know today as Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. Everett spoke for more than two hours compared to Lincoln’s two or three minutes. Everett approached Lincoln as he finished speaking and said he only hoped that he got as close to the point in two hours as the president did in two ... | | |

| By colweaver on3/30/2010 4:50 PM | |
| I guess there are those who believe we Americans are just like people in other countries. Obama said he believed in American Exceptionalism just like people in France believe in French Exceptionalism and the Dutch believe in Dutch Exceptionalism. He was trying to evade the question, but most of us know all too well what he meant. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t thank God ... | | |

| | Total War | | Chairman's Thoughts
| By colweaver on3/29/2010 2:41 PM | |
| Lincoln, Sherman, and Grant were the first Americans to employ the concept of “total war.” It’s been around for centuries, but until the Civil War, battles were like a chess board with set-piece movement and defined battlefields with forward edges and rear areas. Total war may include these features, but it exceeds them by including every aspect of resistance. Sherman’s march to the sea wasn’t famous for battles; Sherman made war on civilians ... | | |

| By colweaver on3/26/2010 6:41 PM | |
| Believe it or not, the communists didn’t always occupy the White House and Congress. On the contrary, they used to be Chinese, North Korean, and Russian outsiders. We thought that the fall of the Berlin Wall signaled the end of all that international intrigue. Not so, the intrigue is now in Washington. They called it the Cold War, but still, there was plenty of fighting and bloodshed. The Korean Conflict and Vietnam were hot enough wars for anyone. During the height of anti-communi ... | | |

| "Physiologists should think before putting down the instinct of self-preservation as the cardinal instinct of an organic being. A living thing seeks above all to discharge its strength — life itself is will to power; self-preservation is only one of the indirect and most frequent results." &a ... | | |

| | Nock, Nock... | | Chairman's Thoughts
| By colweaver on3/23/2010 4:25 PM | |
| In his book Memoirs of a Superfluous Man, Albert J. Nock questioned the efficacy of Thomas Jefferson’s ideas on compulsory free education in America. Nock cites evidence of increasing literary rates producing more people able to read signs, yet unable to mentally process the meaning of anything more complex. In other words, he wonde ... | | |

| | Jolly Roger | | Chairman's Thoughts
| By colweaver on3/22/2010 1:11 PM | |
| Flying a friendly set of colors in order to get within gun range of their prey is an old pirate trick. Then, once within range and ready to fire upon the unsuspecting prize, they hoist the Jolly Roger, finally revealing their real intentions. Most of us never were fooled by Obama’s allegiance and intent. He did, however, manage to fool many naive, trusting, and hopeful Americans. He erased any possible vestige of doubt yesterday as he came within gun range and hoisted the ... | | |

| | An Omen | | Chairman's Thoughts
| By colweaver on3/20/2010 10:11 AM | |
| I don’t normally Blog on the weekend, but today is a special occasion. It’s also easier to write when one is inspired, and our monthly GOP breakfast was the perfectly inspiring way to start the day. We must guard against over confidence, but we have every reason to be inspired, hopeful, and expectant. Lieutenant Governor Becky Skillman joined over one hundred Morgan County Republicans militant and united for victory next November and beyond. She and Governor Daniels, our Republican State Senate, and loyal Hoosiers soon to ... | | |

| | Jonestown on the Potomac | | Chairman's Thoughts
| By colweaver on3/19/2010 4:17 PM | |
| 18 November 1978 was the largest single loss of American civilian life in a non-natural disaster until 11 September 2001. It was also one of the largest mass suicides in history. Some of us are old enough to remember when the, so called, Reverend Jim Jones and 909 of his followers drank the cool aid down in Jonestown Guyana. It was also the first and only time that a U.S. Congressman died in the line of duty. California Congressman Leo Ryan was in Jonestown investigating alleged abuses. Jone ... | | |

| | Consumer Healthcare | | Chairman's Thoughts
| By colweaver on3/17/2010 6:27 PM | |
| I’ve had an unusual number of friends in the hospital lately. I’m visiting them in hope of buying my way out of Purgatory someday with spiritual acts of mercy. I’ve always been afraid to even drive by hospitals. I suppose that’s normal since we connote them with bad things. I was a guest of the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary back in 1957, and I don’t have good memories of it. That was back when they actually had nuns working in the hospital instead of owning them.

| | Monthly Breakfast If you didn't get up to attend our monthly breakfast, you certainly missed a good one. Fifty eight Republicans joined our future congressman and current Secretary of State Todd Rokita and our State Auditor Tim Berry for great food and an interesting political discussion. Tim's analysis of Indiana's financial situation was enlightening. This was our first time as guests of Committeemen Bill and Brenda Mitchell and their team at the Brooklyn Christian Church. We hope they will volunteer to host us again; they did a great job. read more ...

| | Upcoming Events We have exciting events in the offing. Eighty five Republicans joined us on Saturday 20 Feb to meet four of the 4th District candidates for Congress. On Saturday 20 March the Lieutenant Governor of Indiana Becky Skillman is our guest along with U.S. Senate candidate Marlin Stutzman. The March breakfast is a pancake breakfast hosted by Mae Cooper at the Morgan County Administration Building 180 S. Main St., Martinsville. We'll start at 8:00 AM. Looking ahead there will be no April breakfast because of our annual Lincoln Day Dinner on Thursday 22 April, where our speaker is the former and future Speaker of the Indiana House of Representatives, Brian Bosma. Looking forward to May for the warm weather and a big race, we also have for the first time the Auditor of the State of Indiana Tim Berry attending our breakfast. Again, we are trying a new location for this breakfast: The Brooklyn Christian Church, 7 S. Church Street in Brooklyn. Committeemen Bill and Brenda Mitchell are putting this event together, and it will fun doubling the population of Brooklyn with Republicans on Saturday 15 May at 8:00 AM. read more ...

| | FLASH!!! Just like me, local democrats are shocked and surprised by the abrupt resignation of their chairman Daymon Brodhacker. This is an interesting turn of events since the reorganization caucus reelected him only last March. Regardless of his reasons, Daymon Brodhacker is one of the nicest people you’d ever want to meet. While I disagree with his spin of the 2008 election results here in Morgan County, and I certainly would not rate the performance of their commissioner candidate as a gain, those don’t detract from the fact that Daymon was a worthy opponent. Daymon was a hard worker, but unlike some of his candidates, he never allowed his frustrations to effect his good humor. He was the happy warrior who probably knew he was fighting a losing battle, but like Benjamin Guggenheim on the Titanic, he went down like a gentleman. Speaking of the Titanic, it’s hard to find a captain when you know how the story always ends. For Morgan County democrats, election day is like Bill Murray’s alarm clock going off in the movie Ground Hog Day; oh, not again. Good luck Daymon. Speaking on behalf of the entire Morgan County Republican Central Committee, we thank you for honorably serving the electoral process. read more ...

| | | New Poll Poll Numbers – Although President Obama remains personally very popular, views on his handling of federal spending have dropped significantly over the last several weeks. According to the latest Gallup poll, a majority of Americans (51%) disapprove of his handling of federal spending and a plurality (48%) disapproves of his handling of the deficit. The poll also says that President Obama’s favorability rating (67%) is similar to President George W. Bush’s favorability rating (65%) at the same point in his presidency. Also, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll, Americans now trust REPUBLICANS on the economy more than the Democrats 45% to 39%. read more ...
