There is no security so forget it.
Chairman's Thoughts By colweaver on12/29/2009 2:07 PM
I was planning to take it easy this week and concentrate on myriad end-of-year items I’ve neglected. However, many are asking what I think about the attempt to blow up that Airbus A-330 on Christmas Day. I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it one more time.
There is no security in this world! All of us are here on a short tenuous stay. There is no such thing as airport security; there is only the illusion of security. The government gauges their effectiveness by t ...

Nock's Remnants and the Gulch
Chairman's Thoughts By colweaver on12/22/2009 4:14 PM
Albert J. Nock isn’t a house hold name--he never was. However, his political philosophy is relevant as we question government’s role in our lives today. He called himself a “philosophical anarchist,” and anyone calling themselves that must be worth reading.  Among his literary works are: Memoirs of a Superfluous Man, and an essay titled “On Doing the Right Thing, which appeared in the American Mercury magazine, and one of my all-time favorites: Our Enemy the State.

Bananas and Barbarians
Chairman's Thoughts By colweaver on12/21/2009 6:05 PM
I remember Richard Nixon’s visit to Venezuela in 1958, and I’m sure he remembered it to his dying day. If you are too young, or too old to remember, then check it out on YouTube. His reception was always in the back of my mind on my many visits to Banana-Land.
Caracas wasn’t one of my favorite fly-in locations for a host of reasons. Nobody in their right mind ventured outside the hotel complex day or night. Frequent gunfire throughout the night made sleeping nea ...

Gore at your Door
Chairman's Thoughts By colweaver on12/17/2009 1:40 PM
We are all so busy that we focus upon those things immediately affecting us, so we react to what already exists instead of heading adversity off at the pass. Al Gore, for instance, isn’t knocking on your door so no worries, right?
Well, Al Gore just entered your home via an envelope from Duke Energy. Now, I’m no fan of Duke Energy, I actually think the name is oxymoronic, it ought to be Dud Energy.  I equate Duke with sitting in the dark while burning up forty fi ...

The Restoration and a Time for Choosing
Chairman's Thoughts By colweaver on12/16/2009 8:24 PM
I asked someone who recently returned from England and Scotland if they enjoyed the sights, and they replied that if they’d seen one castle they’d seen them all. I know how they felt after touring quite a few myself, but I really cannot agree.

Castles are really quite different. Leeds Castle, which is not in Leeds, but is often described as ‘the loveliest castle in the wor ...

The Not So Simple Majority
Chairman's Thoughts By colweaver on12/15/2009 5:43 PM
Once upon a time there was a church in Martinsville experiencing significant growth. For nearly one hundred years the church sat on a downtown corner. Things were just right, but I doubt if anybody could quantify or identify exactly those positive things that seemed to intersect on that corner. It’s sometimes hard to know what makes something feel right, but it just does.
Sunday services filled the seats, but it was hardly standing room only. Late comers might find themsel ...

I miss George
Chairman's Thoughts By colweaver on12/11/2009 5:23 AM
Football is a mystery to me; the only way I know something good happened is when the mascot does somersaults. Though I don’t know a first down from a touchdown I do know who Vince Lombardi was. Vince is still widely quoted, and one of my favorites is: “If you aren’t fired with enthusiasm, you will be fired with enthusiasm.”
“If you aren’t fifteen minutes early then you are late” is another vincism I’ve lived by fo ...

Feeling Warm and Fuzzy?
Chairman's Thoughts By colweaver on12/10/2009 7:45 AM
Even though I’ve missed several Christmases, birthdays, anniversaries and other important family observances I had the satisfaction of knowing my absence made it possible for thousands to be home for their important family days. There is a certain satisfaction in flying people home for the holidays.  Flying during the holidays was actually something I enjoyed; the people were nicer and everything was decorated and bright. There was an unmistakable glow, and how bad could a Dickensian Christmas in London really be?

Bargain Bridges
Chairman's Thoughts By colweaver on12/9/2009 8:22 AM
If you ever wanted to own a bridge now is the time to realize your dream, because they are on sale at bargain basement prices. I’m not talking about used or pre-owned bridges, but brand new structures built to your specification. Though you may not be interested in owning a bridge the reality is that we collectively own several of them right here in our county.
Bridges seem so permanent, but they too have a life span requiring maintenance and eventual replacement.  Constru ...

The Strategy of Failure
Chairman's Thoughts By colweaver on12/7/2009 4:08 AM
I’ve been waiting for the dust to settle on Obama’s new Afghanistan strategy hoping to find more than a feeble attempt to placate, or at least appear to placate, his liberal constituencies. Unfortunately, I see nothing more substantive than a redo of Lyndon Johnson’s Vietnam strategy. That means I really don’t see a strategy.

The contrast between Obama and Johnson ...

Monthly Breakfast

If you didn't get up to attend our monthly breakfast, you certainly missed a good one. Fifty eight Republicans joined our future congressman and current Secretary of State Todd Rokita and our State Auditor Tim Berry for great food and an interesting political discussion. Tim's analysis of Indiana's financial situation was enlightening. This was our first time as guests of Committeemen Bill and Brenda Mitchell and their team at the Brooklyn Christian Church. We hope they will volunteer to host us again; they did a great job.

Upcoming Events

We have exciting events in the offing. Eighty five Republicans joined us on Saturday 20 Feb to meet four of the 4th District candidates for Congress. On Saturday 20 March the Lieutenant Governor of Indiana Becky Skillman is our guest along with U.S. Senate candidate Marlin Stutzman. The March breakfast is a pancake breakfast hosted by Mae Cooper at the Morgan County Administration Building 180 S. Main St., Martinsville. We'll start at 8:00 AM.

Looking ahead there will be no April breakfast because of our annual Lincoln Day Dinner on Thursday 22 April, where our speaker is the former and future Speaker of the Indiana House of Representatives, Brian Bosma.

Looking forward to May for the warm weather and a big race, we also have for the first time the Auditor of the State of Indiana Tim Berry attending our breakfast. Again, we are trying a new location for this breakfast: The Brooklyn Christian Church, 7 S. Church Street in Brooklyn. Committeemen Bill and Brenda Mitchell are putting this event together, and it will fun doubling the population of Brooklyn with Republicans on Saturday 15 May at 8:00 AM.

Why so secret?

The Morgan County democrats are going to try again. They've called a caucus on 25 July for another attempt to elect a chairman, but the public isn't invited. For the record, every Morgan County Republican caucus held in the last four years has been public. Everyone is invited. Why so secret demos?

FLASH!!!
Just like me, local democrats are shocked and surprised by the abrupt resignation of their chairman Daymon Brodhacker. This is an interesting turn of events since the reorganization caucus reelected him only last March.

Regardless of his reasons, Daymon Brodhacker is one of the nicest people you’d ever want to meet. While I disagree with his spin of the 2008 election results here in Morgan County, and I certainly would not rate the performance of their commissioner candidate as a gain, those don’t detract from the fact that Daymon was a worthy opponent.

Daymon was a hard worker, but unlike some of his candidates, he never allowed his frustrations to effect his good humor. He was the happy warrior who probably knew he was fighting a losing battle, but like Benjamin Guggenheim on the Titanic, he went down like a gentleman.

Speaking of the Titanic, it’s hard to find a captain when you know how the story always ends. For Morgan County democrats, election day is like Bill Murray’s alarm clock going off in the movie Ground Hog Day; oh, not again.

Good luck Daymon. Speaking on behalf of the entire Morgan County Republican Central Committee, we thank you for honorably serving the electoral process.

John Voight on Obama
New Poll

Poll Numbers – Although President Obama remains personally very popular, views on his handling of federal spending have dropped significantly over the last several weeks.  According to the latest Gallup poll, a majority of Americans (51%) disapprove of his handling of federal spending and a plurality (48%) disapproves of his handling of the deficit.  The poll also says that President Obama’s favorability rating (67%) is similar to President George W. Bush’s favorability rating (65%) at the same point in his presidency.

Also, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll, Americans now trust REPUBLICANS on the economy more than the Democrats 45% to 39%.
